What do high school wrestling, some of America’s most influential corporate boardrooms, and executive coaching have in common? All three are more efficient and effective when driven by a leader that embraces vulnerability. My name is Marty Griffin and I learned from a young age that showing up authentically is essential for individual and business growth. Keep reading to hear about the lessons I learned along the way – namely that embracing vulnerability is priority #1 in genuine leadership.

A Passion for Leadership and Development

My story begins in Chicago, where I grew up as the middle child in a close-knit Irish Catholic family. They have always had a big influence on me. When I was a kid, my parents always saw the potential in everybody. My father, a lawyer, treated people with kindness and respect, regardless of their position or rank. My mother, a special ed teacher, embraced the differences in her students and helped them realize their potential. Our home was a place where all our friends, each with their unique qualities, were welcomed and celebrated. This was where I really understood that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, had the potential for greatness.

I went to Notre Dame High School, where my leadership journey started in an unexpected place: the wrestling team. I weighed a mere 85 pounds when I joined, and my first year was a struggle. But, I persevered, eventually becoming the team captain and setting school records for takedowns and escapes.

Despite wrestling being an individual sport, I found that I performed at my best when it meant something to the team. It wasn’t just about individual victories; it was about collective success. The joy of thinking about what the team could accomplish together working towards a common goal was a feeling like no other. This early experience with wrestling laid the foundation for my future coaching approach: a deep connection to leadership, teamwork, and personal growth.

The Shift to Coaching and Corporate Leadership

After graduation and a successful teaching career, I transitioned into the corporate world working in distribution or sales roles at a senior level for companies like AON, Ameriprise/American Express, General Electric/Genworth, and most recently, Ohio National. Each position presented a new set of challenges and opportunities, but my passion for leadership and development stayed with me.

During my time at GE, I faced a unique circumstance: integrating four disparate groups into a cohesive sales effort. It was a situation where the coaching skills I had developed throughout my life came to the forefront. It may sound cliché, but it was about creating an environment where people trusted me because they knew I wanted them to succeed.

I discovered that I could get people to work together by giving them ownership of the process. It became a process of asking the right questions, guiding the group to discover their goals, and helping them chart the path forward. It wasn’t about imposing my ideas; it was about co-creating a strategy and plan together. It was about transforming “my plan” into “our plan.”

The Power of Vulnerability in Executive Leadership

I came to understand that leaders don’t need to have all the answers; they don’t need to project an image of invincibility. In fact, admitting vulnerability could build trust and engagement within a team.

Vulnerability in leadership takes various forms. It could be as simple as admitting that you don’t have all the answers to a complex problem. It could be acknowledging your own mistakes and learning from them. It’s about letting go of the need to be right all the time and focusing on what is right for the team and the organization. This creates trust.

In many organizations, there’s a dynamic where the person in charge speaks, and everyone else remains silent, even if they disagree. It’s a culture where people aren’t sure if it’s safe to disagree, so they remain silent. But I made a conscious effort to do the opposite. I wanted to create an environment where people felt safe to voice their thoughts, even if it meant disagreeing with me.

At the end of the day, what I wanted people to know was that I genuinely cared about them, regardless of their role or position. I wanted them to feel comfortable being themselves around me, knowing that I was there to support them. I believed in their potential, and I always listened for their greatness.

My Coaching Philosophy in Action

Along the way, I’ve developed a love of leadership and the love of helping others develop into that next most radiant version of themselves.

I’ve recently started a new chapter in my coaching journey by creating the Griffin Executive Group. I bring together 10 to 12 business owners or CEOs and create a unique space for them to share challenges, problems, ideas, and opportunities.

In this group setting, CEOs and business owners open up about their challenges and concerns. They share their successes as well as their failures and fears. This level of transparency creates trust among the group members. They feel safe in this space because they can be themselves, admit their vulnerabilities, and receive support and guidance from their peers.

What has been particularly gratifying is seeing these CEOs and business owners collaborate on solving problems. They leverage their collective wisdom, executive leadership, diverse perspectives, and shared experiences to develop innovative solutions and create mutual accountability. It’s a testament to the idea that vulnerability doesn’t weaken leadership. It strengthens it.
